Locking the Digital Front Door: Cybersecurity for Hawaiʻi Families

January 18, 2025 Kāneʻohe, Oʻahu 4 min read

Phishing texts pretending to be HECO. Fake package notices. Compromised email accounts at family-owned restaurants. The threats facing Hawaiʻi households are constant — and most people have never been shown how to defend themselves.

    Thirty minutes, real protection

Instructor Kainoa R. led the room through a step-by-step lockdown of phones, email, and banking apps. Every attendee left with two-factor authentication enabled on their most important accounts and a password manager installed and seeded with their top ten logins.

    Keiki online

The second half focused on family safety — age-appropriate device settings, conversations to have with keiki about social media, and how to spot the early signs of online grooming or harassment.

    Outcomes

    • ›45 households hardened their primary accounts on the spot
    • ›Free password managers distributed to every attendee
    • ›Local school requested an in-class version of the workshop
